Alwington sits west of downtown Kingston, bordered by Union Street to the north, Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard to the west, Lake Ontario to the south, and Albert Street to the east.
Alwington is one of Kingston's oldest neighbourhoods, and its history runs deeper than most. Alwington House, built in 1832, served as the residence of the Governor General while Kingston was the capital of the united Province of Canada, from 1841 to 1844. The house was badly damaged by fire in 1958 and demolished the following year.
Alwington Place, a subdivision developed in the 1960s on the former estate grounds, includes a private beach reserved for residents. That's a rare feature this close to the city core.
Around twenty bus routes serve the neighbourhood, making it one of the better-connected parts of the city for transit. It's a genuinely walkable area for daily errands, though a car still comes in handy, and the biking infrastructure sees heavy use. A grocery store and a café or restaurant are usually within a short walk no matter where you're standing. Primary schools and daycares are close by too, though there's no high school inside the neighbourhood itself.
The atmosphere leans quiet, with low traffic noise and a residential feel. Nightlife isn't really an Alwington thing, but it's easy to find nearby if you want it. Green space is a real strength here. Roughly twenty parks sit within easy reach, including Portsmouth Olympic Harbour Park, spread out enough that most residents have one close to home.
The neighbourhood's housing stock reflects its age. About seventy percent of homes are single detached, with the rest split between small apartment buildings and duplexes, and most of what's here was built before the 1960s. Three and four-plus bedroom homes are the norm, and roughly two thirds of residents own rather than rent. Its location puts residents within walking distance of both downtown Kingston and Queen's University, with Lake Ontario forming the entire southern edge of the neighbourhood.
