Kingston Area Lakes Compared: How Far, Who Approves What, and Which Fits You

Last updated: October 2026

The lakes within about an hour and a quarter of Kingston are not interchangeable. They differ in how far they are, which municipality governs the lot, who approves docks and shoreline work, and whether the water level is managed. This page puts seven of them side by side so you can see those differences before you look at a single listing. It is a starting point, not a full guide: for each lake, confirm the details for the specific lot with the municipality and the conservation authority.

How far is each lake from Kingston, and what sets each one apart?

Loughborough, Sydenham and Dog lakes are the closest, at about 20 to 30 minutes from Kingston, and Gananoque on the St. Lawrence is about 27 minutes. Charleston Lake is about an hour, Bobs Lake is about 70 to 80 minutes, and Sharbot Lake is about 75 minutes. Drive times are to the nearest village or shore and change with the shore, the season and traffic.

Sydenham LakeAbout 30 minutesSouth FrontenacThe village of Sydenham sits at the west end of the lake. A dam manages the water level.
Dog LakeAbout 30 minutesSouth FrontenacPart of the lower Rideau Canal system, linked to Cranberry Lake. Battersea and Sunbury are the nearby villages.
Charleston LakeAbout an hourThe provincial park is in Leeds and the Thousand IslandsA provincial park on the shore. The lake is the main source of the Gananoque River.
Bobs Lake70 to 80 minutesMostly South Frontenac, with parts in Central Frontenac and Tay ValleyA chain of basins and bays, and a reservoir for the Rideau Canal.
Sharbot LakeAbout 75 minutesCentral FrontenacA village on the north shore with a grocery, pharmacy, clinic, library and public beach.
Gananoque and the 1000 IslandsAbout 27 minutesThe Town of Gananoque, or Leeds and the Thousand IslandsThe St. Lawrence River, with island and boat-access properties and the Canada-U.S. border through the boating area.

Drive times are from Kingston City Hall to the nearest village or park entrance (OpenStreetMap routing, October 2026), except Loughborough Lake and Bobs Lake, which come from my Loughborough guide and my Bobs Lake guide. Municipalities and facts for Charleston, Sharbot, Dog and Sydenham come from the lake associations, Wikipedia and the municipalities, and should be confirmed for any specific lot.

Which lakes are closest to Kingston?

Loughborough, Sydenham and Dog lakes are all within about 30 minutes, and Gananoque is about 27 minutes by road, so they are the lakes where a regular drive to Kingston is most practical. Charleston, Bobs and Sharbot lakes are an hour or more, which makes them a better fit for a weekend place, though some buyers live there full time. Drive time is only one factor, so also ask who maintains the road to the specific property in winter.

Who approves docks and shoreline work on each lake?

It depends on the lake. Loughborough and Sydenham are in the Cataraqui Conservation area, Bobs Lake is in the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority area and is managed by Parks Canada, and Dog Lake is part of the Rideau Canal system. For Charleston and Sharbot, confirm which conservation authority covers the lot, because the answer is not the same as for the Cataraqui lakes. Contact the municipality and the conservation authority before you plan any dock, boathouse or shoreline work.

Who to ask first
LakeStart here
Loughborough LakeCataraqui Conservation for docks, boathouses and shoreline work, plus South Frontenac or the City of Kingston depending on the lot.
Sydenham LakeCataraqui Conservation, which manages the Sydenham Lake dam, plus South Frontenac.
Dog LakeSouth Frontenac and Cataraqui Conservation. Because the lake is part of the Rideau Canal system, also ask Parks Canada whether it must approve in-water work.
Bobs LakeThe Rideau Valley Conservation Authority for shoreline work, and Parks Canada, which manages the water level.
Charleston LakeThe Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands, then confirm which conservation authority covers the lot.
Sharbot LakeCentral Frontenac. The lake drains through the Fall River to the Mississippi River, so ask whether the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority covers the lot.
Gananoque and the 1000 IslandsCataraqui Conservation covers the St. Lawrence shoreline from the Bay of Quinte to just east of Brockville. Transport Canada and the municipality may also be involved. See the Gananoque guide.

How do water levels differ from lake to lake?

Several of these lakes are managed, so the level you see at a showing may not be the level in the fall. Cataraqui Conservation draws down Sydenham Lake each autumn, Parks Canada manages Bobs Lake as a Rideau Canal reservoir and has it lowered by mid-October, and the St. Lawrence is regulated under an international plan that still does not give full control of the river. Ask how deep the water is at the dock in the fall, not only in summer photos.

  • Sydenham Lake. Cataraqui Conservation lists the Sydenham Lake dam among the managed lakes it draws down each fall, to make room for fall rains and spring runoff and to stabilize levels before the ice forms.
  • Bobs Lake. Parks Canada manages the water level because the lake is a reservoir for the Rideau Canal. See the Bobs Lake guide.
  • The St. Lawrence. The International Joint Commission says regulation does not ensure full control of lake or river levels. See the Gananoque guide.
  • Everywhere else. Ask the seller, the lake association and the municipality how the level behaves in dry years and in the fall.

Which lakes have a village close by?

Sydenham Lake has the village of Sydenham at its west end, and Sharbot Lake has a village on its north shore with a grocery store, pharmacy, medical clinic, library and public beach. Dog Lake sits near the villages of Battersea and Sunbury. For the other lakes, check what is close to the property you are looking at before you assume services are nearby.

A village changes daily life more than most buyers expect. It decides how far you drive for groceries and a pharmacy, how easily guests can find you, and how a property is served in winter. Walk or drive the route from the property to the nearest village before you offer.

How do I decide which lake is right for me?

Start with how you will use the place: year-round or weekends, how far you are willing to drive, whether you want a village nearby, and how you want to be on the water. Then use the lake quiz to narrow the list. It matches your answers to one of seven areas and links to the relevant guide.

The two-minute Which Lake Is Right for You? quiz gives you a match from Loughborough, Sydenham, Dog, Bobs, Charleston, Sharbot and the Thousand Islands. If you leave your email at the end, I will send new waterfront listings in that area.

What should I check on any lake before I offer?

Test the well, inspect the septic system, confirm who owns the shoreline and whether a shore road allowance separates the lot from the water, check how you would reach the property in every season, and get an insurance quote before you go firm. Then confirm the municipality, the conservation authority and what applies to that specific lot.

  2. The septic systemA septic-specific inspection. What to know about septic.
  3. The shorelineWho owns it, and whether a shore road allowance sits in front of the lot. Shoreline ownership.
  4. Road accessWho maintains the road in winter, and whether it is municipal, seasonal or private. Road access.
  5. InsuranceGet a quote before your offer firms up. Waterfront insurance.
  6. The municipality and the conservation authorityConfirm both for the specific lot, using the table above.
